* CHAPTER 1 *

The lyrics of ‘Now Comes the Night’ tell me not to be afraid. But afraid is exactly what I am. Afraid to close my eyes. Afraid to have them open. Afraid of all the years that were taken from me. Afraid of the hurt that exists in every part of my broken soul. Afraid to live. Sitting in my lounge room with a tumbler of Jack in my hand all I can do is stare around the havoc that is my life, everywhere I look I see the mess that surrounds me. In one corner there are newspapers and bills which are stacked in piles, dishevelled, a lot like my mind. In another corner, discarded dirty clothes that are waiting for them to be picked up and cared for, exactly like my body. Behind me lies rubbish strewn carelessly, hoping that one day they’ll be thrown out, exactly like my soul. It’s been twenty three years since the first night where that beast touched me. Twenty three years of embarrassment and shame have followed and enveloped me. Twenty three years have gone by where only one living being knows what happened, the beast that I didn’t get to kill. The day I turned sixteen was the day I was going to kill him, it was also the day that my mom intervened and enrolled me into the army. I woke up that morning knowing I was going to take his life, but I went to bed that night in quarters with another twenty nine males. My mom couldn’t tolerate my behaviour any longer, the fighting, the hatred I had towards everyone, the dark words that I’d spit out at anyone that would listen. No one understood why I was like that, so I was shipped out with my mom packing my bags and taking me to the barracks herself. That was also the best decision she could’ve made for me. In the seventeen years since I’ve been in the army, I’ve quickly raised through the ranks. I’m a Sargent Major with a thousand men to command, this is the easy part. Being given orders and following them to a tee then commanding my men in the way The United States Army has trained me to. At work I’m totally in control, I expect absolute excellence and I certainly don’t tolerate ill behaviour. The Army’s taught me patience and control. But no matter what I do, the moment I’m home and the uniform comes off, I can’t find that balance and I can’t bring that control over to my personal life. I’m sure on the outside I look like a man that has it all, a man other men envy, a man others want to be, a man women want and a man most would want in their existence. But, I don’t wish my life on anyone. My phone starts ringing, and all my now sluggish brain can do is look around from the chair I’ve sunk into and wonder where in this hell hole my phone is. Throwing back the contents of the tumbler, I feel the burn slide down my throat, and its enticing temporary numbing ways makes me forget, even for a split second what exactly I’m looking for. But it rings again, and this time I know that I need to answer it. It may be Joanna calling me about Lucy. Maybe Lucy’s hurt, maybe I need to get to her quickly. My mind instantly clears and I jump out of the seat, because if I need to get to my daughter, then I don’t want to be in this mindset. The phone stops ringing while I look for it, but starts again with the same standard ring tone. I finally find it, buried in the bottom of my work bag. Looking at the screen it’s coming up a private number. Thank god, it’s not Joanna. “Hello.” My voice is all rough from the burn of the liquid that allows me a sliver of sanity. “Ryan, you sound like shit.” “Mason, fuck man. The hell happened to you?” Mason Carter’s my best friend since I can remember. Actually he’s my only friend since I can remember. “I got a couple of weeks off from shooting and I’m back. You got Lucy this weekend?” “Nah, Joanna has her. What have you got in mind?” “I’m thinking of coming up for a few days, to spend some time with my best mate. What do you think Ry, can you fit me into your busy schedule?” he says with a chuckle in his voice. And my stomach does that little twist it always did when I’d hear Mason laugh. I’m not gay, I don’t do guys, but Mason being around always did something to me. I noticed it after he told me he no longer wanted me. I mean that’s pretty fucked up right? “Sounds great, you got somewhere to stay?” I can feel my own blood starting to pump harder through my body. “I was hoping on staying with you. Look, I’ve been invited to an awards event Saturday night. Wanna come as my plus one?” He lets out another chuckle. “What the fuck, Mase. Really? Take a woman with you.” “She’s the one that told me to meet her there.” I feel a slight twinge of disappointment, he has a woman? I mean I should be delighted for him, shouldn’t I? “Oh, who is she?” I ask feigning happiness for him. “I’ll tell you about it when I see you, bro. Gotta go, so I’ll see you on Friday. What time are you due home from work?” “I’ll be home by 1700. I can leave a key with Kaitlyn next door though if you’re coming earlier.” “Nah 5pm works for me, see you then.” He hangs up and I go over and sink back into my seat. I let the worn fabric of the chair scratch up against the backs of my legs as I replay the conversation I just had with my best friend. I hear his chuckle again and my cock twitches in my shorts. Closing my eyes I try and not imagine how he looks. The second last time I saw him he was detoxing and looked like shit, his straggly oily hair hung over his face, and his body was too skinny. He look almost emaciated, his skin was too big for his body with his bones protruding through. Two years ago Mason was so heavily into drugs that I thought he’d die. I was waiting for the phone call from his parents telling me when and where the funeral was. He was a changed man for those few years that he kept his habit up, he was unpredictable and totally untrustworthy, but I never gave up on him. Whenever he needed a place to stay, I always had my front door open for him unless Lucy was staying with me. No matter what he did, I always had his back. He stole from me, he used me and he even tried to pick fist fights with me, but I was unwavering. I knew it was the drugs and I tried to help him as much as I could. I mean, who was I to judge him? Then one night when I was watching TMZ, they announced that Mason had gone into rehab. That was the last I saw of him, until 12 months ago, when he ended up on my door step. He was looking healthy and also extremely ashamed. That night he explained how he was at his breaking point and a woman saved him, but that’s all he told me and I never pushed him to reveal more than he wanted. We all have secrets we don’t ever want to share. We all have skeletons lurking in our closets, just the size of the bones change from person to person. Breathing deeply through my nose as those memories play around in my head, I notice I’ve willed my cock into submission and the thought of being attracted to Mason totally disgusts me again, I’m not gay. I open my eyes and look around the room and think, I best get this place looking like my life is in order and not just the broken empty shards that lay like an unfinished jigsaw puzzle it actually is.

* ABOUT THE AUTHOR *

I don't do 'normal'. I've found that the more I write, the more I like being different to other authors. I write in first person, and I love to challenge a reader. I take the normal and switch it around. For me, I really enjoy getting a reaction from a reader. So if I can evoke an emotion (regardless of if it's the emotion the reader wants) then I figure that I've done my job as an author I want to be. I really quite revel in taking people out of their comfort zones and pushing them to read something different. My genre of writing is, well quite frankly, where ever my mind goes. I won't label myself because I don't like sticking to one genre. My goal with writing is just to take people away from whatever is going on in their lives, even if it's only for a split second. I'm a go with the flow sort of person and don't really take a course of action to get where I am going. I live in the moment and don't usually worry about tomorrow because whatever life is due to bring me, I'll be happy to accept. I love my family and friends and will help anyway I can if someone needs it. I really don't like people that are nasty just because they can be, I don't believe that's necessary, I mean life's hard enough as it is! I hope you enjoy my books, I've had a hoot writing them. There's more to come..... Til next time. M xx

EXCERPT:

I picked up the half brick holding the door open, and the TV set exploded in a shower of glass.

For a moment Frank stood staring at the TV as if he thought it shattered on its own. He spun to

face me.

I continued to stand with my arms folded over my chest and my shoulder against the door

frame. He looked around as if the spiders in the place would come to his rescue. I tugged on

the cuffs of the leather gloves I wore. Flexed my fingers. When his hand tightened on the pool

stick he held, I wanted to tell him that a wooden stick wasn’t much use in a gun fight. But unless

he went for a gun, I wasn’t going to shoot him, not yet anyway.

“Get the fuck off my property,” he said.

A block of wood nailed into the door served as a supplement lock. I reached up and spun it

closed, and while keeping him in my field of vision, I hooked the eye bolt as well. I hadn’t seen

a phone in the shed, not last time I was here, nor this time. But that didn’t mean some pal of his

wouldn’t show up--and anyone pals with this guy would have to be a cast member of the same

loony-toon’s show.

“Where is Kat?” I asked him.

“You stooo-pied?” he said back, drawing out the word stupid in a juvenile manner. “I already

told you, she’s my wife, and that if you kept trying to bother her, I’ll have you arrested.”

“You see any cops? I don’t.” I moved over the concrete floor and stood near the bar.

He found some brain cells and kept the pool table between us. Held the pool stick in both

hands. Glanced at the door.

“I have security cameras. The company already called the cops.”

“Well then, you don’t have anything to worry about,” I said back. I’d come across a few

pathological liars in my lifetime, but never someone who thought the rest of the world had an IQ

of less than 80 and would believe whatever came out of their mouth. “How should we entertain

the people watching us until they get here?”

Confusion ran over his face. His lies didn’t make me edgy, his particular flavor of insanity

mimicked a bully. Lots of words of bravado that he expected others to be frightened of--no

matter how absurd. He was strong, of that I had no doubt, he worked at a labor intensive job,

but he was filled with so much fear it surrounded him in a shimmering cloak. Just like the sweat

on his forehead.

I walked along the edge of the pool table. Picked up the ten ball with it’s marred blue stripe.

Rolled it across the table and bounced it off the rail on the other side of the table--caught it when

it came spinning back.

“Where’s Kat?” I tossed the ball from hand to hand.

“That’s for me to know and you to find out,” he said.

I let the ball fly. It hit him in the right shin. He bent over with a yelp. He edged towards the

door, dragging his right foot. I spun the eight ball across the table, caught it, tossed it from hand

to hand.

“Go for that door and the next one hits your head.”

He stopped and pulled himself up straight. Dug in his pocket and got out a pathetically small

knife. He opened the blade and held it out in front of him. Laughable. Unless he stuck it in my

neck, he couldn’t even hit an artery with it.

The Shadow Reader Giveaway Blast (Sandy Williams) 01/08/14

The Shadow Reader Trilogy Swag-For-Brag Giveaway Blast

December 31, 2013 was the best New Year’s Eve I’ve had in a long time. The Sharpest Blade, the third book in my Shadow Reader series, hit the shelves. The Shadow Reader books follow McKenzie Lewis, a human who can not only see the fae, but she can track them when they fissure (or teleport) from place to place. That little talent of hers has put her in the middle of a fae civil war, a war that finally comes to a conclusion in The Sharpest Blade.
Readers have waited a long time for this book. I’m so grateful for their patience, and for all their support these last few years. The reception McKenzie has received has been awesome, and I’ve met so many wonderful readers since The Shadow Reader was published. Thank you all for sharing McKenzie’s adventures with me, and I hope 2014 brings you many hundreds of fabulous and kickass reads.
About Sandy Williams
Sandy Williams author picSandy Williams has lived and breathed books all her life. When she was a teen, she was always the first to finish her class assignments so that she could read as much as possible before the bell rang. Her grades didn't suffer (much), and she was able to enroll in Texas A&M University. She didn't sneak in novels there, but every other line of her college lecture notes are filled with snippets of stories. After she graduated, she decided to turn those snippets into books.
Sandy is the author of The Shadow Reader novels, an urban fantasy romance series about a human who can both see and track the fae. When Sandy isn't writing, she's taking care of her twin boys, who also debuted in 2011. They keep her busy, but she's occasionally able to sneak in time to read books by her favorite authors, and she still enjoys playing EuroGames like Dominion, 7 Wonders, and Agricola.

There can only be one allegiance. It’s her time to choose.
Some humans can see the fae. McKenzie Lewis can track them, reading the shadows they leave behind. But some shadows lead to danger. Others lead to lies.
A Houston college student trying to finish her degree, McKenzie has been working for the fae king for years, tracking vicious rebels who would claim the Realm. Her job isn’t her only secret. For just as long, she’s been in love with Kyol, the king’s sword-master—and relationships between humans and fae are forbidden.
But any hope for a normal life is shattered when she’s captured by Aren, the fierce and uncompromising rebel leader. He teaches her the forbidden fae language and tells her dark truths about the Court, all to persuade her to turn against the king. Time is running out, and as the fight starts to claim human lives, McKenzie has no choice but to decide once and for all whom to trust and where she ultimately stands in the face of a cataclysmic civil war.

The Shattered Dark
A love declared. A war waged. A future endangered.
McKenzie Lewis has a gift. It allows her access to a world few have seen, and even fewer can comprehend. It’s her secret. And it exists in the shadows…
McKenzie was a normal college student, save for one little twist: she’s a shadow reader, someone who can both see the fae and track their movements between our world and the Realm. It’s a gift for which she has been called insane, one for which she has risked family and friends—and one that has now plunged her into a brutal civil war among the fae.
With the reign of the king and his vicious general at an end, McKenzie hoped to live a more normal life while exploring her new relationship with Aren, the rebel fae who has captured her heart. But when her best friend, Paige, disappears McKenzie knows her wish is, for now, just a dream. McKenzie is the only one who can rescue her friend, but if she’s not careful, her decisions could cost the lives of everyone she’s tried so hard to save.

Torn between two worlds. Torn between two lives.
McKenzie Lewis’s ability to read the shadows has put her—and …those she loves—in harm’s way again and again. The violence must end, but will the cost of peace be more devastating than anyone ever imagined?
After ten years of turmoil, the life McKenzie has always longed for may finally be within her grasp. No one is swinging a sword at her head or asking her to track the fae, and she finally has a regular—albeit boring—job. But when a ruthless enemy strikes against her friends, McKenzie abandons her attempt at normalcy and rushes back to the Realm.
With the fae she loves and the fae she’s tied to pulling her in different directions, McKenzie must uncover the truth behind the war and accept the painful sacrifices that must be made to end it. Armed with dangerous secrets and with powerful allies at her side, her actions will either rip the Realm apart—or save it.

Can they find happiness with each other or is their too much to overcome? Only time will tell if they can learn to let go.

Prologue

Laurel
I needed to hold out to make it to Garrett’s penthouse. I could feel the walls closing in around me as a sense of heaviness invaded my body, weighing me down. My vision began to blur. My mind was reeling. Come on, just hold out a little longer. You can do this. You need to get to Garrett. His security guys probably see what a mess you are and he’s already on alert. He’ll be there for you. My mind wanted to argue the fact that I’d just pushed him away from me moments earlier, but I knew Garrett; once his mind was set on something he wanted, he wouldn’t give up easily. I just prayed the same held true for me. I hated to admit it, but I needed him now more than I ever had. He was the only thing going through my mind as Chase slammed in the walls and counter and as he pulled me down into the glass. Normally I’d have given up and just taken the beating, but I could hear Garrett’s voice encouraging me to fight, to move out of the past and focus on the future. I felt the weight of the frying pan still in my hand, reminding me how I finally got off a clean shot to Chase’s head and managed to run for it. Luck had been with me when my neighbor stepped off the elevator and the elevator doors started to close on their own. I had one shot at escape and the only place I could run was back into Garrett’s arms. As I entered the key code for the penthouse, I prayed he would still be there to catch me. Everything around me seemed to move in slow motion as the elevator opened on his floor. I know my feet moved, because my body was inching closer to Garrett’s shocked face. I could barely hear his words, “What the hell happened, Laurel?” I could almost focus on Thompson and Dillon running past me, one heading for the elevator, the other to the stairwell. I somehow managed to squeak out, “Chase.” Garrett’s arms were outstretched, but he wouldn’t touch me. Why? Help me! I wanted to scream. Hold me! Then the world seemed to go black and I could only hear him curse, “Fuck,” before feeling my body drop. I heard the clang of the frying pan hitting the floor. I expected my body to be next, but I felt the warmth of his arms encase me, pulling me close to his chest as he gently lowered me to the ground. “No, Laurel! Oh, God, no! Stay with me, baby. I’ll make sure we get Chase and make him pay for what he’s done.” His voice, normally so composed and controlled, was shaking and I felt moisture hit the sides of my face. Could he be crying? The man who was always in control of everything was actually crying! “Stay with me, love. I’ll make this right, just don’t leave me. I can’t take losing someone else in my life. I can’t lose you.” I tried struggling against the haziness of the darkness, urging myself to wake up so I could hold his hand, but no matter how hard I tried, my body seemed unwilling to do what my brain so desperately wanted, to soothe him, to reassure him I was still here, that I still cared for him. Time seemed to tick away as Garrett held me close. “Why couldn’t I have just followed you down?” he chastised himself. “Why didn’t I fight harder for you? You mean everything to me.” His voice was choked with emotion. I meant as much to him as he did to me? How could this be? We were always good in bed together, but he never expressed this level of emotion. The elevator dinged and I could make out the squeak of wheels and the drop of heavy bags onto the floor. “Thank God you’re here,” Garrett said, and I felt his body shift. “Someone attacked her in her apartment and she has low blood sugar. She’s crashing! Help her! Do anything you have to do, just save her, please!”  The level of desperation in his voice was a straight hit to my heart, to my soul. I wanted to yell out, “I’m still here, Garrett! I can hear every word you’re saying!” but I could hardly feel my mouth to open it. “We need you to let go of her hand and get out of the way so we can help her, sir. The best thing you can do is give us room to do our job. We’ll do everything in our power to get her the help she needs.” “Garrett, please step away, let them do their work,” Thompson’s voice rang out. He must have returned with the paramedics.  He never used his first name, why now? I heard the cracking of a voice and muffled tears. “She’s got a fiery spirit, much like yourself Garrett. If anyone can pull through this, she will.” Thompson’s voice was a little shaky, but his words seemed to settle Garrett, as the sound of tears halted. Garrett’s voice was laced with fear and emotion. “Did you catch—” The question was left open ended, but I knew who they were talking about. I strained my ears, trying my hardest to focus on their words. I needed to know if they caught the jerk who did this to me. “Now is not the time, sir. Your focus needs to be on Miss Hart, while mine will be on handling this bastard.” I’m sure Thompson didn’t expect me to hear the hushed tones in which he whispered, “I’ll update you more later; he had escaped the apartment by the time we got there.” He paused and I felt Garrett’s body stiffen. “The police already have issued an APB and we have every available man out there looking. I’ll stay behind to help with the crime scene and fill the police in on what we know. You go with your girl; take care of her, she needs you.” I felt a sharp stab to my finger and a number called out; it must’ve been the paramedic. “She’s at 40 and dropping. We need to start a glucose drip to get her sugars back up.” No wonder I can’t fight this haze; my sugars are too low. “Let’s get her in a neck brace and onto a back board. We need to transport immediately.” I felt strong hands move around me and my body being secured to something stiff. I couldn’t move; not that I could before, I guess.  “Are you related to her, sir?” a different voice asked. “She’s my girlfriend. She means everything to me.” His voice broke on the last part, like he barely managed to get the words out. I’m his what?! Since when did I become his girlfriend? I’m not complaining, but an update would’ve been appreciated here. We were fighting up until… “We’re going to transport her to the hospital, sir. Did you want to ride up front with the driver or meet us there?” I felt the stretcher lift up and push towards the direction of the elevators. “My father, Dr. Waters, will be meeting us at the hospital,” I heard Garrett say, his voice a lot more confident than a moment ago. “I’d prefer to ride up front with the driver.” The voices were muffled for a while, but I felt his hand squeeze mine and the gentle brush of his lips across my forehead. “Please be okay, my love. You have no idea just how badly I need you in my life.” Somewhere along the ride to the hospital, my adrenaline rush began to fade and the pain of what happened started to take a toll on my system. “Her blood pressure’s increasing and her heart rate is up!” a voice called. Please, God, let me get through this so I can make things right with Garrett. I need to tell him that I forgive him, that I overreacted when I found out who he is. I need to tell him that I love him. I heard someone yell back over the radio to administer something and within seconds, I felt the coolness of the medication slip through the IV line. The pain was more tolerable, but the darkness finally had its way and pulled me under.

Widowed at twenty-five, Sawyer Hartwell has no choice but to return to her hometown. Broke and alone, the intention was to heal and find herself again, but how can she heal in a place filled with so much sorrow and memories she yearns to forget?

Dean Preston has regretted leaving Willowhaven since the day he rode off on his motorcycle six years ago, destroying the only love he had ever known. Returning too late, he's found small comfort in a new life with Lily, but with Sawyer back he's not sure of anything anymore.

The time has come for Sawyer and Dean to face the past, to learn from their mistakes. The road to healing is paved with old wounds, each one threatening to tear them down completely. Carrying their own scars close to their hearts, they must both confront what's gone before or lose their second chance.

The measure of who we are is what we survive. Who we become is up to us.

EXCERPT:

Bailey
The bell rings.  He's early.  I look down at the white terry cloth robe I have wrapped around me with only my matching red lace lingerie under it.
Crap.
I walk down the stairs and open the door for Andrew.
"Jeezus Bailey.  What’re you doing to me?" Andrew asks as he walks in, wraps his arms around me, and pulls me in for a kiss.  I can feel him start to untie the robe and then he puts his hands on my bare skin.
"We are going to be late for our dinner reservations if I don't go get dressed now."
"I can think of other things to do instead of going out to eat."
I step away from him, debating my options.  I give Andrew a sly smile and turn to go upstairs.  I can hear that he is following a few steps behind me.  I step up to my closet and pull out a pair of jeans, since that was what Andrew was wearing, and a baby doll T-shirt.  Andrew is standing in the doorway so I decide to put on a little show.  I take a deep breath for courage and drop the bathrobe to the floor at my feet and glance over my shoulder.
Andrew's hands are on the doorjamb and his knuckles are turning white but he doesn’t move from his spot.  He is just there to watch me dress.
That is so hot.
I bend at my hips and step into my jeans and very slowly pulled up my jeans until they were just over my bottom.  I turn to face him and cock my hip to the side.  He has one hand on his hardness.  I take the black t-shirt and put it on my arms and lift them both over my head so the shirt slides down my arms.  I slide my hand down my arm, then slowly down my side, then back up to pull the shirt into place.  Finally, I step into my sandals while zipping my jeans, grab my sweater, and give Andrew a huge smile.
"I'm ready.”
